Biography
Margaret Mayora joined The Dearie Law Firm, P.C. in February 2024. She attended the University at Stony Brook, where she earned her undergraduate degree. She then obtained a Master of Science from the Harriman School of Management & Policy at the same university. She later earned her Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School. She is admitted to practice law in New York State, as well as in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Before joining The Dearie Law Firm, she operated the Law Office of Margaret Mayora, in Staten Island and New York City, from October 2002 to February 2024. Her general law practice included representing clients in residential real estate transactions, probate and administration proceedings in the Surrogate’s Court, civil litigation, and administrative matters. Margaret’s practice involved every aspect of client representation, from due diligence and contract negotiation to court appearances and other matters. Over the course of her career, Margaret has achieved many professional accomplishments, including:
- Successfully appearing in over 400 unemployment insurance appeals on behalf of employers at the NYS Department of Labor, with an impressive success rate of 90%. Her work involved strategizing, preparing witnesses, conducting direct and cross-examination, and arguing motions.
- Defending a corporate officer from $200,000 personal liability for corporate failure to remit withholding taxes in a proceeding before the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance.
- Advising an international shipping client with annual revenues of $200 million on the negotiation of commercial leases in key locations such as New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, and Miami.
- Drafting and arguing a successful motion to dismiss a Chapter 7 proceeding in bankruptcy court.
